A People-Centred Health System

CAPCH-ARC Inaugural Forum
A Landmark Event for the Journey to a People-Centred Health System

The CAPCH Academic Research Collaborative forum on Friday Jan 22nd was a landmark date for CAPCH’s journey to fulfill the vision of a People-Centred Health System for Canadians.

The board of CAPCH is convinced that for a paradigm shift to a people-centred system to occur, it is imperative that the major health stakeholder groups collaborate around a shared vision. On Friday we had our inaugural academic forum and learned that the academic research community is open to being a leader in this endeavour.

On Jan 22nd, 45 people with very diverse backgrounds came together to discuss people-centred health. Immediately, I knew that there was a synergy and excitement in the room that meant that this gathering was going to be different. Somehow, the vision for a people-centred health system for Canadians was the cause that could help us all to move beyond theory into action. As one of the attendees commented, “This was the best academic  forum I have ever attended and  I believe that we will actually do something!”

We have put together a summary of the day and, as you can see from the presentations, the dialogue, the feedback, and the plans to move forward, the event was a great success in every aspect. The challenge now is to build on this success. As Bill Tatham so eloquently stated “Just do it”.

I congratulate the core organizing committee of Alex Jadad, Harvey Skinner, Kevin Leonard, Bill Tatham and Lori Nave as well as the many people in the background who made this possible. I also thank Bonnie Adamson and the staff at North York General Hospital for hosting this event and sharing their facilities.

The primary objective of CAPCH is to enable health leaders to come together in an open, friendly, non-threatening, and supportive environment to design projects that will ultimately fulfill the vision for people-centred health and make Canada a world leader again.

If you or your organization wants to stop the rhetoric and “Just do it” then we are interested in working with you. We welcome your input and enquiries. Contact Lori (lori@capch.ca ) if you want to be part of this journey.

It has been 15 years since I first tried to make a difference in health care and there is a general agreement that the time is right for this to happen.

It is going to be an exciting year!

Warm regards,
Vaughan

Dr. Vaughan Glover will be participating in a plenary panel session entitled "Whose System is it Anyway." Over the years, service delivery, technology and demographics have changed and the health system has evolved.  The current sustainability crisis is presenting us with perhaps an unprecedented opportunity to consider significant change. But from what to what? This session will look at the historical and changing role of each stakeholder in an integrated health system.
